I thought I would write a bit about one of my all time favourite essential oils – Frankincense. If in doubt, use Frank! A mighty powerful oil that can enhance the other oils into your system. Frankincense, also known as olibanum, has been used for thousands of years and is a popular type of essential oil used to help the following: fight disease-causing inflammation; support heightened immunity, relieve chronic stress, reduce pain, prevent dangerous infections, reduce the signs of aging and improve overall beauty, decrease the appearance of scars, amongst other qualities.
But many people remain unaware of the added cancer-fighting potential of this precious serum, which researchers from the University of Leicester in the UK (among others), confirmed through rigorous scientific testing.
Also known as boswellia, frankincense claims as part of its vast nutrient profile a unique compound known as acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid, or AKBA for short. Scientific tests have determined that AKBA is a sworn enemy of cancer. With funding from the government of Oman, researchers from the University of Leicester were able to uncover how frankincense may prove to be a safe and effective therapy for women who suffer from ovarian cancer – one of the leading causes of cancer in women.
Researchers discovered that the AKBA found in frankincense oil demonstrated clear efficacy.
Here’s what Kamla Al-Salmani, lead author of the paper and a PhD student at the University’s Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine department, had to say about their findings in late 2013:
After a year of studying the AKBA compound with ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro, we have been able to show it is effective at killing cancer cells. Frankincense is taken by many people with no known side effects. This finding has enormous potential to be taken to a clinical trial in the future and developed into an additional treatment for ovarian cancer.
Related research into AKBA has shown that this unique substance is also effective against other forms of cancer as well, including breast, colon, and prostate cancers. And the evidence suggests that frankincense isn’t just a supplemental treatment to go along with chemotherapy and radiation; in some cases it may actually be preferential as a replacement.
A growing body of research has recently unlocked the doors to our understanding of why frankincense benefits our health. In a study published by Phytotherapy Research, for instance, when mice took 1–10 milligrams of Boswellia serrata orally, researchers discovered that multiple levels of their immune systems were stimulated including (5):
- Delayed hypersensitivity reaction (early 24 hours, delayed 48 hours)
- Cytokines (interferon gamma, interleukin-4, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha)
- T-cell interactions (i.e. CD4/CD8, which are generally low in AIDS patients)
In layman’s terms, frankincense can significantly supercharge the immunity system! Two basic ways this is accomplished is by proliferating lymphocytes (white blood cells, which are the body’s primary defense team) and by keeping inflammation at bay (which is arguably the primary risk factor for most chronic diseases).
This may also explain why frankincense is effective in helping treat autoimmune conditions like bronchial asthma, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis.
It is recommended to put a drop under your tongue everyday to help build immunity. Make sure you use a high quality of essential oil that is recommended to take internally. I particulary love the brand doTERRA and can be trusted fully. If you need to get hold of a bottle, please contact me as I do sell them and other essential oils. I love the smell so I usually apply it to my chest every day for protection as well as for the lovely aroma.
