Stress is a natural feeling of not being able to cope with specific demands and events that may occur in your life. Anything that poses a real or perceived challenge or threat to a person’s well-being can cause stress. There is no single level of stress that is optimal for all people. What is distressing to one may be a joy to another. Everyone is different and no size fits all.

When we agree that a particular event is distressing, we are likely to differ in our physiological and psychological responses. When we are faced with a challenge, the stress or fight-and-flight response kicks in and the body reacts by releasing large amounts of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. This response can sharpen our senses and physical abilities to deal with immediate challenges.

All stress isn’t negative as some stress can lift our performance and ability, so, in small doses, experiencing stress can help us to perform and respond well to challenges. However, ongoing chronic stress can cause or exacerbate many serious health problems, including cardiovascular disease, mental health problems, obesity, menstrual problems, sexual dysfunction and gastrointestinal issues.

Prolonged stress has also been correlated with insomnia, decreased sleep duration and poorer quality sleep. Anxiety can play a huge part of disturbed sleep, particularly if its around the 2-4am. This can lead to feelings of fatigue, malaise, difficulty concentrating, irritability and mood disturbances.

Our body needs the opportunity to recover and turn off the stress response. A good night’s sleep, in combination with other stress-reducing measures (i.e. relaxing activities, exercise, good nutrition) plays a key role in how well we manage our stress levels.
