I love this article by Don Tolman and truely believe that sunscreen is just another marketing ploy… I know everyone has their opinions, and in case you’re interested “to sunscreen or not to sunscreen”, have a read of this article.. You may be surprised at what you may learn…
Over recent decades we’ve been told to cover up, avoid the sun and slop on sunscreen at all costs – so that we don’t get skin cancer!
But we need to take a closer at this…
The truth is that for generations, prior to the introduction of chemical sunscreen, there were few cases of skin cancer. The sun has always been the very source all life on earth and is actually vital for preventing a host of cancers like Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer and even avoiding and overcoming emotional trauma like Depression.
When you dig into the statistics, you soon realise that there is a compelling relationship between the increase of skin cancer diagnoses and the mass-marketing of commercial sunscreen that began in the late 1950’s.
SKIN CANCER RATES ON THE RISE
The statistics are shocking in Australia, for example, where ‘sun safe’ campaigns have been promoted for decades. According to the Australian Cancer Council’s website, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, and more than 750,000 people are treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers each year.
The figures are similar per capita for other developed countries, where people have been force fed, fear-based mass marketing campaigns to sell chemical-based sunscreen for the past 2-3 generations.
WHAT CAUSES SKIN CANCER?
In addition to ‘food-less foods’, ‘life-less drinks’ and the plethora of chemicals that people tend to put on their bodies each day, I believe that the primary cause of skin cancer is not getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables grown seasonally, in the temperate zone where you live, into your diet on a regular basis.
As well as this, there is mounting evidence to support the carcinogenic dangers of chemical sunscreens. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group found that over 75% of 2000 sunscreens, covering 257 brands, contained toxic chemicals.
The study also noted that ‘…some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some have toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, some act like oestrogen and disrupt hormones, and several can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation.’
TOXIC AND HARMFUL CHEMICALS
If you see any of these ingredients listed below in your sunscreen, I’d recommend that you do some homework before lathering them on your skin.
Because your skin is cytophylactic (like a sponge), it virtually ‘eats’ whatever you put on it – and so if it’s toxic chemicals like these you’re using – they’ll be absorbed into your bloodstream and you’re going to most likely pay a price down the road:
- Para amino benzoic acid
- Octyl salicyclate
- Menthyl anthranilate
SUNSHINE FOR HEALTH
It’s sad that many doctors are still telling their patients to avoid the sun at all costs! When, it is precisely the sun that holds the key to avoiding and overcoming many diseases that are now considered epidemic in the Western world, including prostate cancer, breast cancer and clinical depression to name a few.
We need more sunshine, not less, and while there is certainly such a thing as too much sun in one setting, the fact is that almost nobody living in modern cities gets even the minimum daily requirement of sunshine! This results in the vast majority of the developed world’s populations being mal-illuminated.
So essential to life is the Sun, that most plants won’t grow without it.
And humans require it as a natural source of Vitamin D to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellness!
I’ve always advocated getting out and exposing at least 80% of your body to natural sunlight for at least 15-20 minutes a day whenever you can. This ensures that your skin and body soak up the life-giving nourishment the sun delivers.
In this way, your body will generate enough Vitamin D to naturally improve your mood, immune systemand cancer resistance.
If you do have fair skin and want to venture out in the summer, or live in a sunny tropical climate, there are natural alternatives to toxic chemical sunscreens.
The best are cold pressed plant-derived oils that contain totally natural enzymes because they nourish the skin and as you gradually build a tan. They can even protect your skin from prolonged or excessive exposure to the sun:
- Cold-pressed Coconut Oil
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Sesame Oil
- Pomegranate Oil
- Watermelon Seed Oil
These oils are the primary ingredients for my new Sun Loves Me chemical-free natural sunscreen, if you’re looking for a convenient, plant-based alternative to commercial sunscreen. Plus, we add the protection of Zinc Oxide, a powerful non-toxic mineral that has been used for thousands of years, that sits on the skin protecting it from excessive UVA, B and C rays.
To use or not to use sunscreen is a challenging question for so many people as a result of the powerful ‘sun scare’ campaigns that have been pushed in the media for so many years. Thankfully though, there’s a growing awareness, and more and more information is readily available enabling you to do your own research about chemical-based sunscreens. You can then make the choice that’s right for you.
